Field Coil Loudspeakers
Treehaus Audiolab speakers are built around ultra-high efficiency full range drivers, subtlety augmented by a low-range woofer and a super-tweeter. This arrangement allows nearly all of your music to flow effortlessly to the full range driver, uninhibited by crossover components.
The heart of the speaker is the main full-range field-coil driver produced by Atelier Rullit. The foundation of these drivers rests in Klangfilm and Telefunken field coils. They are meticulously rebuilt, redesigned, “restomodded” to transform into some of the best drivers available at any price. Utilizing old German copper and ultralightweight “Aero” and “Super Aero” papers for the cone, voice coil, and whizzer, they are quick, exact, detailed, and pure. The incredible strength of the high voltage field coil and the low mass of the voice coil and cone assembly produces a driver that is like a fine sports car. To quote Colin Chapman, “simplify, and then add lightness.” These are not drivers that require big power to muscle around your favorite tracks; they let the music flow briskly through them.
The full-range driver is allowed to gently roll off at the frequency extremes. And when it is said it is full range, it is truly is full range, going below 100hz on its own and well over 15K on the high end.
The super tweeter is gently filtered by a very high (16kHz+) first-order crossover consisting of a single, high quality capacitor, along with an attenuator so you can adjust the response for your listening taste and room. Utilizing high strength AlNiCo magnets, they also move with speed to match the energy of the main driver.
The speakers are designed to be bi-amped, and the woofer is recommended to be fed by a solid state amplifier, using a DSP module to control its crossover points and response. While this may seem counter to the rest of the Treehaus Audiolab design ethos, the reality is this solution is quite complimentary. With a low-pass crossover, around 90hz or so, the woofers are acting in a frequency range where they are just adding foundation, out of the range of a typical bass guitar. The ear isn’t a sensitive to the nuance here, but it is incredibly sensitive to room interactions and the bass bloat and inconsistent response these frequencies can present. Utilizing DSP, these issues are alleviated, and a sonic base is created that adds the sonic shove of live music without drawing any attention to itself.
